Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952)
A world-renowned spiritual teacher, Yogananda introduced Westerners to a path of Self-Realization through meditation and Kriya Yoga. The first Yoga master of India to take up permanent residence in the West, he started travelling throughout the United States in the 1920’s on what he called his “spiritual campaigns.” With his nonsectarian and universal message, Yogananda’s enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls in America. Yogananda’s impact has been lasting; his Autobiography of a Yogi helped launch a spiritual revolution in the West.
Bishnu Ghosh (1903-1970)
Introduced to the field of yogic exercise by his older brother, Paramahansa Yogananda, Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to document yoga’s ability to cure and heal physical ailments. In the 1920’s, Ghosh developed a school of yoga that blends spiritual inspiration with highly disciplined physical regimen – one which continues to inspire and inform many of the world’s most foremost yoga practices today.
Bikram Choudhury (born 1946)
The founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India, Bikram is one of the preeminent Hatha Yoga Masters living today. Bikram began studying yoga at the age of four in Calcutta with Bishnu Ghosh, and carried his teachings and message to the United States, where he has trained thousands of teachers and maintains over 500 affiliated schools. Bikram currently lives and teaches in Los Angeles, with his wife, Rajashree. Both are India National Yoga Champions.
Tony Sanchez (born 1956)
Considered by many yogis as the present ‘underground Master of Yogis’, Tony trained with Bikram from 1976 to 1980 when he was certified by Ghosh’s College of Physical Education and appointed director of Bikram’s San Francisco Yoga College of India, (1980-1984). While director of the US Yoga Association and SF Yoga Studio, 1985-2004, he won 2 world cup titles in Yoga Sport from the International Yoga Federation, Argentina & Brazil; launched an award-winning yoga program throughout the SF school district; produced 4 videos; 2 books and is one of the yoga masters featured in the Yoga Journal coffee table book, Yoga. He relocated to Los Cabos in 2005 where he was director of yoga at One&Only Palmilla until launching the Yogic Physical Culture Academy (2011).
