BIKRAM YOGA FOR RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS & JOINT PAIN
Let’s face the facts: Joint pain is …painful! Any joint pain can rob you of mobility and make even the simplest tasks difficult. In the past, when your knee is hurt, your hip stiffs, or your back is throbbing, the first thing we want to do is popping a couple of Motrin IB or Tylenol and … REST.
The New York Times recently reported that: “One of the biggest mistakes people make with [joint pain] is to limit movement of the affected joint, which leads to stiffness and weakness that only makes matters worse.” If you want to recover quicker from joint pain, you MUST keep moving! However, when you’re suffering from aches, pains, and stiffness, exercise is the last thing you want to do. For people who suffer from chronic joint pain such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, any exercise that put tension on hands, wrists, and hips are extremely difficult.
Regular exercise makes a big difference when you have rheumatoid arthritis. “It’s important to keep muscles strong to support the joints, and movement is important to reduce stiffness,” says Susan J. Bartlett, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at McGill University in Montreal. Yoga can be a fun alternative to walking, swimming, biking, and other activities. Like any other type of exercise, yoga helps you stay at a healthy weight and get stronger, which in turn takes pressure off your joints. Being fit also makes you less likely to get heart disease and diabetes, two conditions that are more common if you have rheumatoid arthritis.
Why does Bikram Yoga work so incredibly well for Rheumatoid Arthritis and people with chronic joint pain? It is a unique combination of:
• Strengthening tendons around joints, thus protecting them from soft-tissue inflammation
• Increasing blood flow to inactive and inflamed areas, which reduces pain
• Effective dislodgement of problematic ‘Circulating Immune Complexes’ from the joints
• Internal massage of the digestive system to enhance the functioning of the digestive process (I believe a disfunctional digestive process is the underlying cause of RA)
• Realignment of limbs that tend to disfigure from the autoimmune attack
Thus, Bikram Yoga can be the single best exercise for reversing RA pain, stiffness and damage. The key is consistency. A consistent yoga practice on a regular schedule is key to seeing the maximum results.
